- Canada signs distances and speed limits in kilometres, the United States in miles. Signs in French point to Quebec.
- Spanish signs mean Mexico or Central America; look for warnings about speed bumps (topes, túmulos) and shop fronts painted with brand logos.
- Many US states need a number plate only on the back of the car. No front plate is a hint towards those states, many of them in the south-east.
